Europe’s Secret Season: Why Spring Is the Best Time to Explore by Bike or on Foot

Spring in Europe is pure magic. The snow melts from mountain peaks, vineyards awaken with new leaves, and wildflowers transform the countryside. Cafés spill onto cobblestone streets, and trails and roads open wide under crisp, blue skies.

It’s a season made for cycling and hiking adventures—mild temperatures, colorful landscapes, and the joy of discovering Europe before the crowds return. From the lavender fields of Provence to the tulip trails of the Netherlands, this is Europe’s best-kept secret: the perfect time for active travel.

And with Trek Travel’s guided cycling and hiking tours, every detail is covered—so you can simply ride, walk, and take it all in.

Why Spring Is the Best Time to Visit Europe

Spring is one of the most rewarding times to visit Europe. You’ll pedal or hike through quiet villages, enjoy early-season hospitality, and see landscapes in full bloom. Average temperatures across southern and central Europe hover around a comfortable 60–75°F —ideal for active vacations.

Culinary travelers will also love the seasonal bounty: wild asparagus, fresh truffles, new olive oil, and early rosé wines. It’s also the best time to experience Europe’s off-season charm, with fewer tourists and more authentic local encounters.

Whether you prefer to cycle France’s Loire Valley, ride stunning Andalusian roads in Spain, or hike Italy’s coastal trails, spring gives you the space—and the scenery—to enjoy Europe at its best.

Gravel Riding Redefined: Trek Travel’s New Gravel Bikes for 2026

Gravel riding has taken the cycling world by storm. The appeal is simple: quiet backroads, rolling farm tracks, vineyard trails, white gravel climbs, and the freedom to ride where pavement ends. At Trek Travel, we’ve embraced gravel from the very beginning, curating trips in some of the most breathtaking gravel destinations in the world.

And now, we’re thrilled to announce the biggest upgrade yet. In 2026, guests on our gravel trips will ride the brand-new Trek Checkpoint SL Gen 3 or the all-new Trek Checkpoint+ SL e-gravel bike. These bikes are the most advanced gravel machines Trek has ever built—and we can’t wait for you to experience them on your next cycling vacation of a lifetime.

Why Gravel with Trek Travel?

At its heart, gravel riding is about freedom. It’s about choosing the road less traveled, finding quiet trails where cars are rare, and pedaling into landscapes that take your breath away. Tuscany’s strade bianche, Girona’s rolling dirt roads, Croatia’s vineyard tracks, and Vermont’s covered bridges all offer a unique connection to place that paved roads can’t match.

When you travel with Trek Travel, gravel goes beyond adventure. You’ll ride supported by expert guides, world-class hospitality, and the best bikes in the industry. It’s not just about tackling rugged terrain—it’s about knowing that your equipment, your support, and your experience are second to none.

And now, in 2026, Trek Travel gravel trips are elevated even higher with the newest fleet of Trek Checkpoint gravel bikes—carbon, powerful, and precision-built for any ride.

Explore the New Bikes for 2026

The Trek Checkpoint+ SL 6 AXS

New for 2026, the Checkpoint+ SL 6 AXS joins our fleet as Trek’s first electric-assist gravel bike available on Trek Travel trips. This e-gravel bike is designed to make every ride more enjoyable, whether you’re looking for the extra push to crest steep climbs, extend your mileage for the day, or simply savor a bit more comfort on unpaved routes.

The Checkpoint+ is built around a lightweight OCLV carbon frame with IsoSpeed comfort technology, which reduces the vibrations of rough terrain and keeps you fresh on long days. Its 45 mm tubeless tires grip confidently over gravel and dirt, while the carbon wheels keep the ride fast and responsive. The quiet TQ motor and 360Wh battery (with optional extender) provide a natural-feeling boost that helps you take on climbs with ease and explore farther than ever before. Paired with SRAM AXS electronic shifting and powerful disc brakes, this bike puts control and precision right at your fingertips.

For guests new to gravel or those who want to feel more confident on demanding routes, this e-gravel bike makes every adventure feel possible. Even seasoned riders will appreciate the way it smooths out the toughest days, turning challenging rides into pure joy. Available as an optional upgrade, the Checkpoint+ will be offered on select trips beginning in 2026.

The Trek Checkpoint SL 7 AXS Gen 3

If there’s one bike that defines gravel performance in 2026, it’s the Checkpoint SL 7 AXS Gen 3. Included in the price of your trip, this machine is the gold standard for riders ready to take on adventurous miles across a variety of terrain.

The SL 7 Gen 3 features Trek’s OCLV 500 carbon frame, engineered for stiffness and responsiveness without sacrificing comfort. Its IsoSpeed decoupler absorbs chatter and bumps, so you can ride longer and stronger with less fatigue. The geometry is tuned for endurance, offering stability and confidence while still keeping the ride lively. With 45 mm tubeless tires, carbon wheels, and a gravel-specific SRAM Force XPLR AXS wireless drivetrain, the bike balances power, speed, and control perfectly. Disc brakes ensure reliable stopping power in any condition, from muddy tracks to steep descents.

Whether you’re spinning through the vineyard roads of Istria, climbing Tuscany’s iconic white gravel, or exploring the rugged trails of the Black Hills, the Trek Checkpoint Gen 3 transforms every route into an extraordinary ride. It’s the ultimate gravel bike for guests who want a smooth, responsive, and performance-driven companion for their Trek Travel vacation.

Their gravel-specific 1x drivetrains are built to handle steep climbs and rugged terrain, while powerful disc brakes provide confidence and control in all conditions.

The partnership between Trek and SRAM means that every detail of your ride—from shifting to braking—is supported by world-class engineering. It’s one more way Trek Travel ensures that your gravel vacation is elevated to the highest level of performance.

Where You’ll Ride in 2026

The best gravel bikes in the world deserve the best destinations. In 2026, Trek Travel guests will ride the new fleet on legendary gravel routes across Europe, North America and beyond.

Imagine pedaling along Croatia’s vineyard-lined trails and unwinding at a boutique wine hotel. Or tracing Tuscany’s strade bianche, where every curve brings sweeping views of the Italian countryside. In Girona, you’ll follow the same gravel routes that pro cyclists call their training ground. Closer to home, Vermont’s covered bridges and rolling dirt roads create a picture-perfect gravel playground, while South Dakota’s Black Hills and Bentonville’s thriving gravel scene offer rugged adventure and cultural charm.

No matter the destination, these new bikes ensure that every climb, descent, and long stretch of gravel is smoother, faster, and more fun than ever before.

The Tour de France Femmes 2025

For years, women’s cycling operated in the background of men’s cycling, living in the shadow of the men’s Tour de France — but that’s changing fast.

The Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift isn’t just another version of the men’s race. It’s become a celebration of female strength, camaraderie, and the raw joy of riding a bike at the absolute limit. This is a race that reminds us what cycling is really about.

The Road to the Tour: A Long Time Coming

The men’s Tour de France began in 1903. But women had to wait much longer for their turn on cycling’s biggest stage.

  • 1955: The first women’s Tour de France is held as a one-off race.
  • 1984–1989: A short-lived revival sees women racing similar routes alongside the men.
  • 1990s–2000s: Various attempts like La Grande Boucle Féminine keep the dream alive, but ultimately fade out due to lack of funding and media coverage.
  • 2022: The modern-day Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift is born — with full ASO support, global broadcast rights, and the legendary Marion Rousse at the helm.

This latest iteration is more than a reboot. It’s a statement: women belong on the world’s biggest stage — and they’re here to shake it up.

How the Women’s Tour Differs

The Tour de France Femmes isn’t just shorter — it’s sharper, punchier, and full of surprises.

  • 9 days, not 21: The women’s race is shorter making every single stage crucial.
  • More action, less control: Unlike the men’s race where the budget disparity allows superteams like UAE to control stages — the women’s race is much less predictable and much more exciting.
  • Different route, same ambition: The women don’t follow the same roads. They carve out their own Tour — like 2023’s unforgettable penultimate stage atop the Col du Tourmalet.
  • Authenticity front and center: The vibe is refreshingly real. Less brand polish, more guts and grit.

Riders like Demi Vollering, Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig, and Lotte Kopecky aren’t just elite athletes — they’re bold, joyful personalities who wear their hearts on their sleeves.

The Podium That Went Viral

During the 2025 Spring Classics, footage of the women’s podium at the Amstel Gold Race went viral on social media. The three medal winners, stood atop the podium, cheered and downed their celebratory beers. The moment went viral.

Why? Because it was positioned in stark contrast to the men’s podium who took a sip at most. The men’s podium felt controlled, corporate and lack-lustre.

This viral moment highlighted what fans increasingly believe: women’s cycling has kept its soul.

Why It Matters

There’s a growing hunger for cycling that feels real. Not just marginal gains, data, and the team tactics of superteams able to afford the best riders— but the joy, the pain, the human stories. And that’s exactly what the Tour de France Femmes delivers.

It’s a race full of:

  • Attacking spirit (when everything is on the line, they go for it)
  • Emotional interviews (tears, laughter, honesty)
  • Moments of connection (both within the peloton and with the fans)

It’s competitive, yes. But it’s also a reminder of why we all ride: for the freedom, the challenge, and the friendships that form when we suffer together.

The Tour de France Femmes isn’t playing catch-up. It’s blazing its own trail — and inviting all of us to remember why we fell in love with cycling in the first place.

Who to Watch

The 2025 Tour de France Femmes promises a fierce battle for the yellow jersey, with some of the most exciting riders in women’s cycling set to return to the spotlight. Defending champion Kasia Niewiadoma will be back to fight for her title, having clinched victory in 2024 by a razor-thin margin of just four seconds. Hot on her heels will be FDJ-Suez’s Demi Vollering determined to overturn last year’s narrow defeat. The formidable, Lotte Kopecky, droppedout of the Giro early hoping to recover from a back injury in time for the Tour de France Femmes.

Meanwhile, several stars of the Women’s Spring Classics, include rising star Puck Pieterse and the Paris-Roubaix champion Pauline Ferrand-Prévot. Olympic gold medalist Ferrand-Prévot came out of retirement to join Visma | Lease a Bike on a three-year deal and the French favourite is shaping up to be a serious wildcard threat.

How Trek Travel’s Green Miles Program Is Helping Employees Go Green (and Earn Money)

Aerial view of Madison, Wisconsin and the two lakes

At Trek Travel, we believe that sustainability isn’t just about the products we use and the experiences we create—it’s about the lifestyle choices we promote. That’s why we introduced the Green Miles Program, an initiative that rewards employees for cycling or walking to work. This program not only helps us reduce our carbon footprint but also encourages healthier, more eco-conscious commuting.

What is the Green Miles Program?

The Green Miles Program rewards employees for the miles they commute by bike or on foot. It’s as simple as logging the miles you walk or ride to work, and at the end of the year, employees are rewarded with a bonus based on the number of miles they’ve accumulated.

The total Green Miles fund is set up each year and the amount is divided among the participants based on the miles logged. The more miles you ride or walk, the bigger the reward. This program is a win-win for everyone: employees stay healthier, save money, and contribute to reducing carbon emissions.

The Impact of Green Miles: Reducing Carbon Emissions and Inspiring Healthier Lifestyles

Since its launch in 2009, the Green Miles Program has helped Trek Travel employees rack up an impressive 50,700 commuter miles by bike and foot—saving an estimated 17,000 kg of CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere. That’s a significant environmental contribution, achieved by simply swapping a car ride for a bike ride or walk.

In 2023, employees biked and walked 4,665 miles, and 3,203 miles were logged in 2024. So far in 2025, approximately 2,700 Green Miles have been logged. With every mile, not only do employees earn money but they also contribute to a healthier planet.

Ride your Bike and Track your Impact

The Sustainability team at Trek Bikes estimates that replacing several hundred miles of driving with riding will offset the carbon that was emitted during the manufacture of your bike. With Trek’s Ride Club App you can track your car replacement rides to see your carbon savings add up, knowing that with each ride you are helping to minimize your own personal carbon footprint. This is one of the powers of cycling: every time you ride, you’re directly contributing to a more sustainable lifestyle.

Why Choose the Green Miles Program?

For our employees, the Green Miles Program isn’t just about earning money—though that’s a nice bonus! It’s about making a small difference in the fight against climate change. By cycling to work, Trek Travel employees reduce their dependence on cars, save money on commuting costs, and stay healthier by incorporating physical activity into their daily routine.

Think a Green Miles Program could work for your business? We would love to hear from you! One of the primary reasons we share about our sustainability work is to encourage our customers and other businesses to join us in our mission. If you’d like more information about how to get a Green Miles program started at your organization please email us at sustainability@trektravel.com and we’d be happy to help.

Join Trek Travel in Cycling Toward a More Sustainable Future

At Trek Travel, we’re not just about creating great cycling experiences—we’re committed to making cycling a part of a sustainable, eco-friendly lifestyle. Join us as we continue to work toward a greener future, one pedal stroke at a time.

Trek Travel’s Guide to the Tour de France

The Tour de France is more than just a race — it’s one of the most iconic sporting events in the world. Each summer we witness a combination of grit, glory over three thrilling weeks. Since 1903, the Tour has captured the hearts of cycling fans, drawing millions of roadside spectators and TV viewers eager to see the world’s top cyclists battle it out across mountains, plains, and cobbled streets.

At Trek Travel, we’ve been part of this magic for years. As an Official Tour Operator of the Tour de France, we have built a reputation for creating unforgettable Tour de France experiences. Whether you dream of pedaling legendary climbs or soaking up the electrifying atmosphere as a spectator, our pro-race tours and spectator viewing events take you to the heart of the action. Our close connection to the LIDL-Trek pro team also means that we can deliver exclusive moments that no other tour operator can match.

What do the different jerseys mean?

When you watch the Tour, you’ll notice riders wearing distinctive colored jerseys. Each of these carries special meaning:

The Yellow Jersey (Maillot Jaune): Worn by the overall race leader — the rider with the fastest cumulative time across all stages. This is the ultimate symbol of Tour de France dominance.

The Green Jersey (Maillot Vert): Awarded to the leader of the points classification, generally favoring sprinters who excel on flatter stages and intermediate sprints.

The Polka Dot Jersey (Maillot à Pois Rouges): Given to the best climber, the “King of the Mountains,” who racks up points on the course’s toughest ascents.

The White Jersey (Maillot Blanc): For the best young rider under the age of twenty-five, showcasing cycling’s rising young stars.

How Do the Teams Work?

Each Tour de France team is made up of eight riders, carefully selected for specific roles — from the team leader aiming for overall victory, to domestiques who protect, support, and pace their leader across the grueling course. There are sprinters, climbers, all-rounders, and time trial specialists, all working together in a complex dance of tactics and teamwork.

There are 23 teams racing in the men’s Tour de France this year and 22 teams in the women’s Tour de France Femmes.

Trek Travel’s close partnership with the LIDL-Trek pro team offers you insider access you won’t find elsewhere. On our VIP Access tours you’ll get the chance to meet riders, snap photos with the team, or even hear firsthand about their strategies before a key stage. We bring you closer to the inner workings of pro cycling — connecting the dots between what you see on TV and the behind-the-scenes action that makes it all happen.

Who to Watch?

The 2025 Tour de France is poised to deliver another thrilling chapter in the ongoing rivalry between Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard. Pogačar, aiming for his fourth yellow jersey, dominated the 2024 season, and so far in 2025 he’s been victorious at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the Tour of Flanders, Strade Bianche, and Fleche Wallonne.

Vingegaard, a two-time Tour winner who made a miraculous recovery from injury to finish second in 2024, has been training hard and has his sights set on reclaiming the top spot on the podium at this year’s Tour.

Remco Evenepoel has yet to race this 2025 season coming off the back of a crash, but the reigning world champion is targeting a comeback at the Tour and is definitely a name to watch. Despite abandoning his race in the Giro this year, Primož Roglič remains a formidable presence in the mountain stages with his Grand Tour experience. Emerging talents like Isaac del Toro and Juan Ayuso from UAE Team Emirates are also ones to watch.

Who to Watch in the Tour de France Femmes

The 2025 Tour de France Femmes promises a fierce battle for the yellow jersey, with some of the most exciting riders in women’s cycling set to return to the spotlight. Defending champion Kasia Niewiadoma will be back to fight for her title, having clinched victory in 2024 by a razor-thin margin of just four seconds. Hot on her heels will be FDJ-Suez’s Demi Vollering, determined to overturn last year’s narrow defeat. LIDL-Trek enters the fray with the powerful Gaia Realini and UAE’s ever-consistent Elisa Longo Borghini is more than capable of mounting a serious GC challenge. Meanwhile, several contenders from the Women’s Spring Classics this year, include rising star Puck Pieterse and the Paris-Roubaix champion Pauline Ferrand-Prévot. Olympic gold medalist Ferrand-Prévot came out of retirement to join Visma | Lease a Bike on a three-year deal and the French favorite is shaping up to be a serious wildcard threat.

As the race unfolds, these athletes, men and women, will undoubtedly shape the narrative of the 2025 Tour, offering fans a spectacle of endurance, strategy, and sheer willpower.

The Hallmarks of a Trek Travel Guide

Being a Trek Travel Guide offers a unique lifestyle with many opportunities and rewards. We are fortunate enough to see breathtaking corners of the world and work with a family of coworkers that are nothing short of incredible. We also have an extreme variety of responsibilities as a Guide representing Trek Travel.

During a typical day, we are extremely organized and flexible. We master trip logistics, manage trip finances and represent Trek Travel with subcontractors. We educate our Guests on safe techniques, enrich their cultural understanding, motivate those who wish to challenge themselves, pamper those looking for the ultimate in luxury, and provide vacations of a lifetime for all. This is simply the beginning. The following are qualities required to be a Trek Travel Guide.

Exceptional Customer Service

At Trek Travel our philosophy is that we have an option for all our Guests. Accordingly, on every trip Guides are expected to personalize each guest’s vacation to their individual abilities and desires by offering unparalleled support and flexibility, with options for all travelers throughout the entire trip.

Superior Hosting Skills

Guides are ALWAYS “on”! Our days can start as early as 5:00 AM and end past midnight with a primary goal to ensure that our Guests are having the time of their lives. Guides must extend their skills from wrenching on bikes to creating gourmet picnics to entertaining dinner conversations with a range of individuals.

Infinitely Flexible, Resourceful and Solution-Oriented

Guides must easily adapt to rapidly changing scenarios, find solutions quickly with their teammates and “roll with it” when faced with a situation that strays from the plan. While we spend an enormous amount of time planning our trips down to the last detail, a large part of what makes our Guests’ trip experience unforgettable are those spontaneous moments that you can’t predict.

A Natural “Connector” with all Personality Types

Mornings, afternoons, and evenings are spent engaging our Guests in conversation both on and off the bike all while maintaining Trek Travel’s legendary customer service and attention to detail. We must possess skills to accommodate any and all Guest personalities, connect the group and genuinely want to get to know each and every guest.

Culturally Aware and Involved

We weave each and every Guest into the fabric of a culture and region, whether it is an exclusive wine tasting at a private Bordeaux chateau, chance meetings with a local farmer on the side of a road or naturalists on our trips to talk about rain forest ecology. We have an innate and insatiable curiosity of our surroundings, as well as natural ability to extend that sense of discovery to those around us.

Fun, Passionate and a Dynamic Zest for Life

Guides are the type of individuals that others enjoy being around because they possess positive energy and a contagious zest for life. The charisma that each guide exudes extends beyond on-trip interaction, it is who we are. We love life, are extremely passionate about people and travel. We want to share that with all other people we interact with.

Polished Professionalism

We are expected to constantly display lightheartedness while always maintaining control of the situation. Responding quickly and decisively to challenging situations, informing our Guests of what is going on are paramount. Maintaining and enhancing mutually beneficial relationships with our sub-contractors in the field is also key, as they are critical to our business.

Safety-Focused

Due to the inherent risks in any physical activity, we have a peerless dedication to ensuring that safe practices are followed, and Guests are educated on proper etiquette habits when travelling with us. All Guides are required to be First Aid and CPR certified, deliver pre-ride Safety Talks and Tips, constantly be aware of Guests’ travelling habits and offer suggestions or warnings as necessary.

Committed to Continuous Improvement

While every trip we run has been painstakingly put together by a team of Guides, Researchers and Trip Designers, we never stop looking for a better way to do things. Are there more scenic routes to get to our picnic spot? Has someone met a charming artisan to host our Guests in their workshop for an intimate lunch? Guides are always looking to improve Guests’ experience and streamline logistical systems.

Fiscally Responsible

Guides have an enormous amount of responsibility placed on their shoulders as they are put in charge of sizable assets such as vehicles, trailers, bikes, and related equipment. We only hire those who display the highest levels of integrity and honesty. We trust our Guides and give them a large amount of discretion in the field; we expect them to maintain exceedingly high fiscal standards and keep all finances in order at all times.

Excellent Communicator

Guides are able to comfortably communicate with Guests by setting expectations, communicating the itinerary and relaying important information in an interesting and fun way. Beyond that, Guides must be proficient in providing thorough feedback and ideas for improvement for every trip they run plus comfortable providing constructive feedback to teammates.

Reliable Team Player

One of the best parts of this job is the people you work with. Not only are you working with another Guide (sometimes 2 or more), you are living, eating and breathing with that Guide for up to several months at a time. Due to the enormous amount of preparation and ongoing work that goes into each Trek Travel trip, our Guides must be able to rely on their teammates to get the job done and have fun doing it.
